Today, the Conservative party leadership roadshow arrives in Scotland. With Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak participating in the latest debate in Perth this evening, we decided, in conjunction with our friends at Diffley Partnership, to check the pulse of the nation.
The poll, taking in the views of over 1000 people in Scotland, makes clear that the country represents a unique challenge for whoever becomes the next prime minister.
Both candidates will be concerned that a quarter of Scots are more likely to vote for independence regardless of who wins, and will therefore need to devote time and energy to mitigating that trend.
Sunak, perhaps because of his high profile since the pandemic, scores much better than Truss amongst Scots when it comes to tackling key issues. However, it also appears that the problems he faced earlier in the year around his personal wealth and his wife’s tax status have cut through in Scotland, where he is seen as less truthful and a lot less in touch with the public than Liz Truss.
You may have already seen media coverage of the polling, but in case not, below is a summary of key data – if you have any questions or want to know more, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us – iain.gibson@charlottestreetpartners.com
